Although approximately a quarter of students aged 12 to 16 have ever used a vape, the coaches interviewed say they see few young people. Young people generally seem to be little motivated to quit vaping. Providers of smoking and vaping cessation support are also still searching for the right form of guidance for this target group. The adolescent brain works differently from that of adults. In addition, peer pressure plays a major role among young people. Coaches therefore say that they think it is a good idea for young people to quit together. For example, one coach says that she supports young people together with a friend. This way, you turn peer pressure into peer support. Should parents actually be involved in this process? The answer seems to be: involve them, but at an appropriate distance.
The Trimbos Institute is working on a practical guide to quitting vaping among young people, with concrete tools for professionals. It is expected to be published in early 2026.
