About the white paper

In the white paper, the authors Wendy Kuijn of VeiligheidNL and Martin van Roijen of de Blauwe Ton provide an update on what the literature says about risky play and answer the question of how risky play contributes to preventing serious injuries. The white paper also explains how parents and professionals view risky play. Finally, the white paper provides examples of proven ways to encourage risky play in practice.

Based on their findings, the authors recommend continuing the shift towards risky play at three levels:

  • At a personal level, by giving children more space, time and trust.
  • At a social level, including cultural, economic and political factors, social norms, parenting style and family routines.
  • At an environmental level, such as infrastructure and public spaces, including urbanisation and the proximity of places to play.
