Approximately half of children never walk to school

According to parents, approximately half of children never walk to or from school. This is more common among 10–11-year-olds (58%) than among 4–6-year-olds (51%) and 7–9-year-olds (49%). Approximately one third walk to and from school four or five days a week.

Cycling to and from school increases with age

Half of 10–11-year-olds cycle to school almost every day (49%), compared with 31 percent of 7–9-year-olds and 14 percent of 4–6-year-olds. A majority of 4–6-year-olds never cycle to or from school (60%).

Research using data from the Lifestyle Monitor

The data in this study are based on information from the core module and an additional module of the Lifestyle Monitor (2019), which is conducted annually among all people in the Netherlands. For children under 12, parents answer the questions.
