Personal stories

Communication with someone with autism can be complicated. An expert by experience explains the challenges that young people with autism face in their daily communication with the world around them. We also let you experience for yourself, through two short exercises, how complicated this can be. Using the principles of VAB Life Course Support, we show the opportunities this could offer these young people.

School or childcare?

Speakers: Nina Wolsink, Marco Mout

How is ... doing now?

If you do not go to school, for whatever reason, you can go to a WALHALLAb in your city. Because learning does not only happen at school. At WALHALLAb, you work with your talent, whether that is fashion or music, entrepreneurship or technology; anything is possible. And the great thing is that you also learn a great deal from the wonderful Masters who work there. Men and women who are detectives or designers, architects or aircraft builders. You will find them with us in all shapes and sizes and… they are ready to help you. No, WALHALLAb is not a school and not childcare. WALHALLAb is WALHALLAb, and there you can be who you are. And the fact that you learn a great deal along the way is an added bonus!

TABOEIEND breaks the taboo on talking about mental health problems among young people

Speakers: Judith Tonnaer, Glenn Schellekens

From Love for Talent

Attention to the mental health of young people is more relevant than ever. One in five young people suffers from a psychological problem. YouTubers Dylan Haegens and Marit Brugman have both experienced this themselves (Dylan with an anxiety disorder and Marit with anorexia). They are concerned about the mental health of young people and want to use their experience, reach, and knowledge from the mental healthcare sector to encourage young people to dare to talk to someone about how they feel. Stichting Durf Te Vragen, of which Dylan and Marit are ambassadors, and Vincent van Gogh voor geestelijke gezondheid/VIGO therefore developed the school project ‘TABOEIEND’.

A virtual and interactive experience that, since November 2021, has been visiting first- and second-year classes in secondary education to introduce young people to mental health. During TABOEIEND, young people learn to recognize emotions more effectively and receive an explanation of the purpose of emotions. In addition, young people receive more information about psychological problems and about when and from whom to seek help if they experience them. The experience is created using various games, animations, and videos featuring well-known experts by experience that are informative and relatable.

With TABOEIEND, the foundation and Vincent van Gogh aim to break the taboo surrounding mental health problems and prevent young people from needing specialized mental healthcare. In this session, we take you through this experience and explain its effect on young people’s awareness of their mental health.
