Why is food education necessary? More and more young people are overweight. An important reason for this is that our environment makes it easier to make unhealthy choices. Fatty, sugary and high-calorie food can be found on every street corner. That is why it is so important for young people to be food literate. This means that they have the knowledge and skills needed to make healthy and sustainable choices. Now and in the future.

With Know what you eat, young people take an important step towards becoming food literate. The lesson package from the Netherlands Nutrition Centre was specially developed for secondary and vocational education. Students work independently on the online lessons and gain knowledge about nutrition through challenging questions and practical assignments.

Young people also take a close look at their own eating habits. They are encouraged to think about what they consider important in terms of health and sustainability. And about what they themselves can do to take a step towards eating more healthily and/or sustainably.

Know what you eat consists of 6 lessons of approximately 30 minutes. The lesson package can be used flexibly.

  • Lesson 1: What does food do in your body?
  • Lesson 2: Healthy eating
  • Lesson 3: Food production and the environment
  • Lesson 4: Making food choices
  • Lesson 5: Buying and storing smartly
  • Lesson 6: Take over the kitchen!

As many as 20,000 students use Know what you eat every year. And we are happy about that. Because not every child learns about nutrition and food skills at home. Knowing what good food is—this will benefit them throughout their lives.
