The trial package consists of the chapters Who am I?, Games and Playing and Thoughts. In the various Wereldreizigers lessons, pupils get to know their new surroundings in an accessible way and learn to tell their classmates about where they come from.
Children grow closer together
Schools that use the teaching method are positive about it. Teachers say that the method creates a greater sense of connection in the classroom. In addition, the children feel more comfortable sharing things with one another.
More about Wereldreizigers
For schools and classes made up entirely of newcomers, there are 10 themes to be covered in approximately 20 lessons. Themes include: who am I, home, celebrations and other important days, games and playing, friendship and saying goodbye. The aim is to give children the opportunity to share their stories, thereby strengthening their resilience.
Wereldreizigers also includes seven mindfulness lessons, created by Ilse Vlietstra, a teacher and internal supervisor of a newcomer class. In addition to newcomer classes, they can also be used in ‘regular’ classes. Children learn to relax, which reduces their stress, improves the atmosphere and increases their concentration.
Four lessons for mainstream primary schools, where there are usually only a few newcomer children in a class, focus on: pupils from other countries, helping one another, moving house and changing schools, and welcoming new pupils. They can, for example, be integrated well into lessons on world studies and citizenship. They are designed so that newcomers do not feel that they are the centre of attention, while still ensuring that the newcomer feels indirectly supported.
