The School & Environment programme

School & Environment stems from agreements in the coalition agreement. Through the programme, tens of thousands of pupils are offered additional activities and support free of charge in and around school, alongside their regular lessons. These include activities such as sports, cooking, coaching and social-emotional development. Such activities are usually not equally accessible to all pupils. The additional activities and support provided through an enriched school day enable them to further discover and develop their talents. To make this possible, local parties such as schools, childcare organisations, sports clubs and municipalities work together in coalitions. The programme also provides opportunities to work towards becoming a Healthy School.

Local choices and Healthy School

What is the best way to use the subsidy? That depends on the needs of the pupils and therefore differs by region. For this reason, local coalitions decide for themselves what they offer. Minister Wiersma (Primary and Secondary Education) indicates that an integrated approach is important in this regard in order to connect school, home and the surrounding environment.

Regional coalitions wishing to work on the health and lifestyle of pupils can make use of the Healthy School approach. This integrated approach is available, among others, for primary education, special education and secondary education. Healthy School can be used to work on one or more health themes: Nutrition, Exercise and sport, Well-being and Relationships and sexuality, Environment and nature, Smoking, alcohol and drug prevention, Sleep, Media literacy, Hearing and Hygiene.
