Non-committal nature
This survival experience is now being organised for the second consecutive year, because it is less self-evident for these target groups to participate in regular sporting events. During the experience, students aged 10 to 12 with behavioural challenges, learning difficulties or an auditory impairment tackle various survival activities. Students do not receive a wristband that is cut off if they fail to clear an obstacle, as is customary in survival sports. Students can get acquainted with the sport without any obligation and decide together with their group which activities they would like to try. The participants come from various schools in Groningen, Hoogezand, Appingedam, Haren and Assen.
Local cooperation
The event is a wonderful local collaboration between Hommes Survivalrun & Outdoor, Hanze University of Applied Sciences’ School of Sport Studies, Special Heroes Netherlands and schools in the region. Students from the physical education teacher training programme support the various groups on their journey of discovery and get to know the target group from special education.
Sport Heroes
The Survival Experience is part of the Special Heroes Foundation’s educational programme on sport & physical activity, called Sport Heroes. In collaboration with local sports providers, students can get acquainted with various forms of sport during school hours. The truly enthusiastic participants take additional lessons after school and then move on to a sports association or club. Students are given the opportunity to discover various forms of sport in an accessible way. Each with their own qualities, because everyone can be a hero!
