The book begins with a foreword by Evelien de Bruijn, a radio and television presenter (including Hart van Nederland). She is pleased that the book exists. In her view, some of the information will open your eyes or make you think about which direction you want to take.
In his introduction, De Vries states that as a parent, you are always involved in your child’s education. He points out that this also has its difficult sides: what if things are not going well for your child at school, if you are worried, do not understand your child, or do not click with a teacher?
He also points out that good cooperation between the school and parents ensures that your child develops better academically, but also feels better about themselves. And that a great deal of research shows that parental involvement is good for children, both in primary school and in secondary education.
To do this in the right way, De Vries discusses seven themes:
- Always involved
- Standing up for your child
- Keeping track of your child
- A new start every year
- Unhappy with the school?
- Responsible for the entire class
- Setting a good example
He provides tips for each theme.
