Physical education rated more highly when taught by a specialist teacher
On average, school leaders rate the following aspects of physical education more highly when it is taught by a specialist teacher than when it is taught by a classroom teacher:
- the quality of physical education;
- the number of physical education lessons per week;
- the amount of time allocated to physical education;
- the extent to which pupils who need additional help receive appropriate support during physical education.
Parents and children positive about teachers’ attention to happiness and health
Both parents and children are satisfied with the attention the physical education teacher pays to the child’s happiness and health. In this regard, it does not seem to matter whether physical education is provided by a specialist teacher or a classroom teacher.
Research using data from the Lifestyle Monitor and the second physical education survey
The results of this study are based on data from the second physical education survey (2021). In addition, data from a supplementary module of the Lifestyle Monitor (2019) were used. This survey is conducted among people in the Netherlands every two years. For children under 12, parents answer the questions.
