Many municipalities encourage and support school gardening. With the 2022 Golden Carrot, the School Gardens Alliance and Jong Leren Eten are putting two municipalities in the spotlight, as inspiration for other municipalities and in appreciation of their support. Is school gardening already well organised in your municipality? Then you can nominate your municipality until 10 May.

School gardens have existed for more than 100 years. For over a century, municipalities have recognised the added value of gardening in a school setting. That is why many municipalities encourage school gardening. They see it as a good way to introduce children to healthy food and teach them about nature and biodiversity. The recent focus on healthy, local food has brought school gardening back to the attention of many municipalities. Municipalities promote healthy nutrition, and education plays an important role in this.

Municipalities support school gardens in many different ways. With the 2022 Golden Carrot, the School Gardens Alliance and Jong Leren Eten are putting a number of municipalities in the spotlight, as inspiration for other municipalities and in appreciation of their support.

Nominate your municipality

Is school gardening well organised in your municipality? Does the municipality support the school garden programme (for several years, with funding and/or expertise, with land or in another way)? Is there a clear connection between the municipality’s policy objectives and the school garden programme? Are schools and other organisations encouraged to start school gardening?

Use this form to explain by 12 noon on 10 May why your municipality deserves the 2022 Golden Carrot! An independent jury will assess the entries. The 2022 Golden Carrot will be presented during the national school garden conference on 25 May.
