Schools can use the Sample Physical Activity Policy for Primary Schools as a basis and adapt it to their school's situation, ambitions and opportunities. It helps with setting objectives, making choices and collaborating with internal and external partners. KVLO and the Knowledge Centre for Sport & Physical Activity do not consider it a problem if schools are not yet ready to implement it all at once. Every step in this direction leads to improvement.

This is followed by an introduction in which the primary school acknowledges the importance of physical activity for the development of every child.

Three main objectives

The physical activity policy has three main objectives:

  • Learning to move well – learning to move well is central during physical education lessons, but psychological and social skills are also developed. Objective: Pupils develop a broad motor foundation and learn to move together and with enjoyment.
  • Getting sufficient physical activity – at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Objective: Pupils are regularly physically active during the school day.
  • Discovering the opportunities for physical activity and sport outside school – discovering different opportunities for physical activity and sport in the local area. Objective: Pupils discover various sports and forms of physical activity and are encouraged to be active outside school as well.

Examples of implementation are described for each main objective, which schools can adapt to suit their own situation.

By getting to work with the Sample Physical Activity Policy for Primary Schools, schools are investing in broad motor development, the development of a healthy, active lifestyle and the well-being of all pupils. In this way, they work together towards a future in which every child enjoys being physically active and feels good about themselves!
