Focus on food education

Blik op Je Eten saw new food education materials launched by caretaker minister Wiersma. She also read to Year 7 about the origins of our food from the book 'Van Honingbij tot Hagelslag".

The tin is also being introduced by various JLE coordinators to primary school classes in the different provinces. In addition, 45 classes won a Blik Op Je Eten and 5 classes won a Farmer in the Classroom guest lesson, through Smaaklessen's Week of Our Food competition.

On Food Education Day on 7 October, Jong Leren Eten organised a free online inspiration session for employees of childcare locations from all over the Netherlands. More than 160 professionals—policy officers, host parents, team leaders, Healthy Childcare coaches and other professionals—were inspired by, among others, Jeltje Meijvogel (Spoony), De Voedingsjuf, Tanya Lammerse and vegetable garden and cooking coaches Roxanne Buschman, Evelien Smits and Leonie van der Ende.

During the Mayors' Breakfast , mayors in 284 municipalities had breakfast with a primary school class as part of the National School Breakfast. A local baker and/or grower also joined them with their own products, telling the pupils about their origins and production. The kick-off took place in Voorst, Gelderland, but the event was also a great success in other provinces. In Terneuzen, Zeeland, Year 7 had breakfast with a cheesemaker who brought local milk and cheese, and they exchanged their own ideas with the mayor for a healthy, sustainable city!

Waarde-ring:

In Zeeland, the vegetable garden coaches won the Waarde-ring from the province! They were nominated by JLE Zeeland and were rewarded in this way for their valuable work.

In Utrecht, 3 Utrecht food heroes also received the Waarde-Ring from the Province of Utrecht—an award for their efforts to bring residents and farmers closer together, with special attention to young people. They are Miranda van leeuwen, an educational farmer and founder of the Boerderijschool; Jan Willem Doppenberg, an MBO teacher and food education provider; and Marieke van Dalen, a young social entrepreneur with her market garden De Coöperij. In Overijssel, agricultural entrepreneurs Judith de Rijk (Olst), Nieske Neimeijer (Heino) and Henk & Alina Udink (Markelo) won. “This year's winners each contribute in their own way to making the connection between farmers and citizens visible and tangible,” said provincial executive Gert Harm ter Bolscher.

Launch of the School Canteen Challenge:

In Flevoland this week, during the launch of the School Canteen Challenge, pupils from Emelwerda College in Emmeloord presented their first ideas for a healthy lunch to alderman René van Amersfoort of the Noordoostpolder municipality. The alderman, together with other experts from the field, gave the pupils feedback and emphasised the importance of food education within the Noordoostpolder municipality. The restaurant itself was represented by the head chef and manager, Kom bij de Boer by two educational farmers, JOGG Noordoostpolder by Bart Maljars, and Welzijnwerk Carrefour (NOP) by a youth worker.
