Study
There is still little known about how young people from low-income families experience sport and physical activity. That is why research agency Labyrinth Research & Consultancy – commissioned by the Knowledge Centre for Sport & Physical Activity – conducted interviews with 24 young people from low-income families. The aim was to enrich the knowledge already available from research with the insights and experiences of the target group itself. None of the young people interviewed participate regularly in organised sports or physical activity; they are therefore not members of a sports club either. The young people were spoken with during the study, rather than being spoken about. This provided an understanding of how they experience sport and physical activity.
The young people identify various barriers that prevent them from participating in sport or physical activity. It is striking that a combination of barriers is often mentioned. This means that support is needed in several areas. In addition, the results reveal various ideas from the young people that could help them start participating in sport or physical activity – or take it up again.
