Increase in cases involving psychological, physical and sexual violence
The report shows that the number of cases involving sexual violence (sexual abuse and sexual harassment) has risen to 498. The number of cases involving possible sexual abuse increased from 96 to 178, of which 103 involved a person charged with duties. This is someone who has a relationship of dependency with a student or pupil. A person charged with duties has a responsibility towards children. This could be a teacher, a caretaker or someone who helps on a voluntary basis, for example with lunch supervision or a creative activity.
The number of cases involving psychological violence also continues to rise. A total of 1,536 cases were registered. Of these, 700 involved (serious) bullying. In addition, 715 cases involving physical violence were received, including 194 reports of (serious) assault.
Rogier Oet, Director of Supervision at the Dutch Inspectorate of Education, responds to the findings: “Everyone should be able to feel safe at school or in their educational institution. The reports we receive show how important it is for pupils and students, parents and professionals to know where to find us. Confidential inspectors listen, provide advice and ensure that signals reach the right place.”
