The pupils in groups 1, 2 and 3 asked forest ranger Tim everything they could think of on Wednesday morning, April 10. How can a tree grow? How can one animal catch another animal? Why is a woodlouse called a woodlouse? Tim explained it all to them. Then it was time for action.

Looking for animals

Tim told them: “You can hide very well on this green schoolyard. Do you know who else does that? Animals! Come on, let’s go and look for them!” Bursting with enthusiasm, the pupils got to work. They knew exactly where to look: in the wooded area next to their school. All kinds of creatures were discovered: worms, woodlice, ants, beetles and snails. Forest ranger Tim was incredibly proud of the pupils. In the end, they all dared to pick up and hold a creepy-crawly. Outdoors, the pupils pushed their boundaries and were amazed by the special discoveries in their own schoolyard. Amber (group 2): “We’re going to stay outside for a very long time! We’re all going to look for animals with forest ranger Tim. It’s a treasure hunt!”

School guide Karen Lamers from IVN de Maasvallei showed the pupils that you can draw on your hand using the orange sap of greater celandine. They all wanted to try it! The kindergarten children also found cleavers, which they could use to decorate themselves, very interesting. The lesson ended with acting out and guessing all kinds of animals. Then there was time for a group photo with forest ranger Tim, an autograph and a high-five. After a morning in the fresh air, the pupils were full of energy and ready to continue with their school day.
