Through a digital journey, children learn all about hearing, sound and preventing hearing damage with HoorToren . The teaching materials consist of storytelling posters, assignment cards, games, sounds, a quiz, a video and worksheets.
Objective
The primary objective of HoorToren is to reduce the risk of hearing damage caused by loud sounds among children and young people. After completing the HoorToren teaching package, children are able to deal with loud sounds consciously and safely.
Target group
The primary target group for the HoorToren intervention is school-age children in grades 1 to 8 (ages 4 to 12). The teaching package can be used in the classroom during a project on health, music or the senses.
Approach
HoorToren is a teaching package for grades 1 to 8 of primary school. The teaching package is divided into teaching materials for four levels: grades 1 and 2, grades 3 and 4, grades 5 and 6, and grades 7 and 8.
Time investment
The package can be used throughout the school during a project week. To cover all worksheets, assignment cards and lesson suggestions extensively, the minimum time investment is between 8 hours (grades 1 to 4) and 14 hours (grades 5 to 8). It is recommended that the project be carried out over several sessions within one or two weeks.
Explanation of the NJi Recognition Committee’s assessment
HoorToren is a very clearly written and practically feasible intervention. The intervention is available exclusively online, via a user-friendly and accessible webpage. The materials look well-designed and attractive. There are no costs associated with this intervention. Areas for improvement include describing the minimum lessons to be carried out and the follow-up actions after a negative result from the hearing test taken by children in the upper grades.
