In collaboration with the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, PARK21, NMCX and the province of North Holland, a tree-rich and highly educational programme had been set up. No fewer than 350 Climate Trees were planted, and a Children's Climate Table was launched during the day. Primary school children from the municipality of Haarlemmermeer engaged in discussions at 14 Children's Climate Tables with Mayor Hoes, alderman Sedee, Queen's Commissioner Van Dijk, politicians and representatives from the business community. Companies such as BP-Nederland, DB-Schenker, Rabobank, Dura Vermeer, Corendon, De Meerlanden, RadboudUMC, Tennet and Monuta joined in and discussed the children's ideas for a better climate with them. The plans that emerged from the discussions at the 14 tables resulted in the Children's Climate Deal. This deal was presented by National Tree Planting Day chairman Albert Verlinde to Mayor Onno Hoes and children's mayor Julia Pieters.
National Tree Planting Day has been celebrated in the Netherlands since 1957. The day was originally conceived to teach children more about nature.
National Tree Planting Day is celebrated every year on the second Wednesday of March. This year, 100,000 children planted 200,000 trees and shrubs. Together, this amounts to 45 football fields. In total, 10 million trees have already been planted in the Netherlands on the occasion of National Tree Planting Day.
