During a short, engaging lesson, children from groups 1 to 8 discover where their tap water comes from, how tap water is purified and how they can use this healthy and sustainable natural product wisely. Schools that register receive free materials. Tap Water Day 2019, held on 25 September, was a great success. Across the Netherlands, more than 100,000 children and over 3,600 classes took part. The opening ceremony was held at Diamant primary school in Het Rooster in Apeldoorn. Willem Voogd, known for his role in Mees Kees, and State Secretary Blokhuis were also there.
Drinking water companies jointly offer programme
Drinking enough water contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Nowhere in the world is the quality of drinking water as high as it is in the Netherlands. To raise children's awareness of this and explain why drinking tap water is a healthy and sustainable choice, the ten Dutch drinking water companies (Brabant Water, Dunea, Evides, Oasen, PWN, Vitens, Waterbedrijf Groningen, Waternet, WMD and WML) are jointly organising National Tap Water Day.
For primary schools and out-of-school care centres
All primary schools and out-of-school care centres can take part in National Tap Water Day and use the free materials. The materials are offered at three levels: groups 1–3, groups 4–6 and groups 7–8. The lesson materials cover the origin of tap water and explain how tap water is purified. Pupils are also given practical tips on how to use tap water more wisely.
Great prizes
By registering your class, you also have a chance to win great prizes: a guest lesson from a water expert, water bottles or shower timers for your pupils. If your school continues to encourage drinking tap water even after National Tap Water Day, you will also have a chance to win an indoor drinking-water tap for the school.
