The average lesson times for regular PE classes have not changed. However, the differences in PE lesson times between schools are increasing. This means that more and more schools are scheduling lesson times for PE that are further above or below the average.

Changes to sports facilities desired

Two-thirds of PE teachers experience obstacles due to the PE facilities (65%). For example, they believe that:

  • the layout is inadequate (35% of teachers);
  • the facility is outdated (27%);
  • there are too few facilities available (25%);
  • the facilities are too far from the school (22%).

Half of the PE teachers therefore want changes to the PE facility or facilities in the future (49%).

Impact of coronavirus measures noticeable to PE teachers

Despite alternative physical activity initiatives during the coronavirus period, many PE teachers feel that their students are less fit (75%), have motor skill deficiencies (60%) and/or are less motivated to participate in PE (48%) than before the coronavirus period.

Cooperation with external parties has also declined slightly compared with previous years. For example, community sports coaches are used almost half as often in secondary education (20%, compared with 37% in 2018).

Third survey among PE teachers in secondary education

This study is a third survey among PE teachers to map the organisation of PE and sport in secondary education. Previous measurements took place in 2014 and 2018. In 2022, 335 PE teachers completed a questionnaire, which was largely a repeat of the questionnaires used in 2014 and 2018. In addition, interviews were conducted with five PE teachers to explore a number of topics in greater depth.
