The MHFA Youth course is specifically intended for adults who work or live with young people aged 12–24. Mental health problems often manifest themselves as early as this age (12–24). However, dealing with these problems requires a different approach than with adults. This course was specifically developed for this target group. The course is open to every adult, such as teachers, but certainly also parents, family members, friends, colleagues, etc.

The MHFA Youth course addresses behaviours that are part of normal development and which behaviours can threaten this development. As with adult MHFA, you will also learn communication skills specifically aimed at young people. You will also gain more insight into the available support options and the barriers to seeking (professional) help.

The mental health problems discussed during the course are:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance abuse
  • Eating disorders

The crisis situations discussed are:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Self-harm
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Serious effects of alcohol and drug use
  • Crisis during psychosis
  • Aggressive behaviour

More information about MHFA and MHFA Youth

MHFA is an accessible course for adults that was developed in Australia in 2000 and is offered in more than 23 other countries, including the Netherlands.

Since its launch in Australia in 2000, this course has been supported by scientific research, and its results have been documented. These research results have already shown in several countries that the programme helps reduce stigma and decreases the social distance between people with and without mental health problems.

Anyone who wants to learn more about mental health problems can take this course. This includes professionals who want to learn how to better deal with mental health problems and employers who consider the good health of their employees important.

The MHFA training takes a total of 12 hours, spread over 4 days (4 x 3 hours).
The MHFA Youth training takes a total of 14 hours, spread over 4 days (4 x 3.5 hours).
