The challenge was launched on 10 October, the Day of Sustainability in Education. In Flevoland, this was celebrated at last year's winning school, Aeres VMBO Almere. During their break, all students were served a wholegrain falafel pita by local caterer Falafel & Zo from Oosterwold. In Overijssel, last year's winners from Agnieten College went on a Foodcamp at Landjuweel 'de Hoeven'.

The challenge

Pupils and students can submit their ideas until 21 February 2025 via the Jong Leren Eten website. The entries will be assessed by an expert jury, and the winners will be announced on the Day of the Healthy School Canteen on 20 March 2025. They will be offered a cooking workshop during which they will prepare their unique canteen snack for the school canteen together with a chef. Jong Leren Eten encourages the school's canteen manager to be involved in the challenge from the outset.

Challenge guidelines

The guidelines for creating a snack are the 5 Gs; Enjoyment, Good value, Healthy, Convenience and Green. Participating schools are supported with a step-by-step plan. There is an opportunity to ask questions of the Jong Leren Eten coordinators in the participating provinces.

Awareness among young people

It is a challenge for every school: a canteen with a healthy range of food and drinks, so that pupils and students do not flock outside the school in search of unhealthy snacks. Young people are also becoming increasingly aware of how important health is and that healthy food plays a crucial role in this. That is why it is time to give young people more control over their own school canteen.
