Various reasons

Concern about the mental health of primary school pupils has several causes:

  • Smartphones show children images that are not suitable for their age.
  • Smartphones keep children from exercising and playing outside.
  • Online bullying is a growing problem.
  • Because mobile phones are seen as a status symbol, children from poorer families who cannot afford a mobile phone often feel excluded. By treating everyone equally, you remove that pressure.

Broader project

The initiative to ban smartphones is part of the much broader It Takes A Village project, which focuses on children's mental health.

The eight participating primary schools each choose a monthly theme to encourage positive behaviour. Children are encouraged to talk about their fears and emotions. There are also ongoing discussions with parents about their children's mental well-being. The initiative involving mobile phones is the most eye-catching part of the project.

Mixed reactions

While primary school pupils have mixed reactions – they regret the measure but also see the risks of smartphones – the parents are mainly pleased. Because everyone is in the same boat, they no longer have to deal with primary school pupils pestering them for a mobile phone.

Other school districts are now considering similar measures. The Irish government is also showing interest. Inspired by the project, the Minister for Education issued new guidelines in November for the use of mobile phones in Irish primary schools.
