The transition from primary to secondary education is a major step for pupils. It is important that this transition proceeds smoothly and successfully for children. Cooperation between the primary school they attended and the secondary school they are entering is important in this regard. Van Rens also argues that children can be involved more actively in this transition.
Transfer of information
Van Rens investigated how the involvement of children, parents and teachers can contribute to a smooth transition. It is particularly important that there is a proper transfer of information between the primary and secondary schools. In practice, this transfer appears to be fairly limited. In addition, the preparation at primary school often fails to meet the expectations of the secondary school.
Child participation
The mentor at the secondary school can play an important role in supporting pupils. However, the experiences of the mentor or teacher do not always correspond with those of the pupils. Van Rens therefore argues that it is important to involve pupils more in the transition from primary to secondary school. Listening to their expectations and experiences can contribute to a smooth transition. In addition, this form of child participation has a positive impact on the development and well-being of the pupils.
