Getting started with risky outdoor play: why and how?

Date and time: 12 November, 1:00–2:00 p.m.

Description: Outdoor play is crucial for children’s health and development. It offers the perfect opportunity to discover and experience. However, children are playing outside less and less and are increasingly protected by their surroundings. At the same time, it is important for children to push their boundaries and discover risks while playing outside. By engaging in risky play, children learn to assess challenges, and it is beneficial for their motor development. However, as a professional, it is not always easy to give children the space to do this, and you may have to deal with overprotective parents and questions about liability. How can you find the right balance between challenging and protecting children?

This webinar addresses the following questions:

  • What is risky play and why is it important?
  • Which adventurous forms of play are possible?
  • What about liability/responsibility?
  • How can you deal with overprotective parents?
  • How can you get started with risky play in practice?

  • Zeina Bassa | Risky Play Consultant, Veiligheid NL
  • Kirsten Visser | Assistant Professor of Urban Geography, Utrecht University
  • Pleun Schaeffer | Play Consultant, Speelmakers

More exercise, less sitting in secondary education

Date and time: 13 November, 4:00–5:00 p.m.

Description: Many young people exercise too little and sit for long periods (10.4 hours a day). In secondary education too, most students spend the majority of the school day sitting down. More physical activity during the school day not only provides health benefits, but also leads to better concentration, more attention in class and greater enjoyment during the school day.

This webinar addresses the following questions:

  • What can you do to get students to exercise more during the school day?
  • What do students themselves consider important?
  • How would students prefer to get active?

The following topics will also be discussed:

  • The importance of a vision and policy regarding physical activity during the school day.
  • The implementation and delivery of physical activity during the school day
  • Motivating and involving students to exercise more during the school day.
  • Students’ experiences with physical activity during the school day.
