About the symposium Moving in and around the School

At the symposium, Prof. Dr Jasper Schipperijn (University of Southern Denmark), Dr Mirka Janssen (lector at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences) and Dr Lars Borghouts (Fontys) will take you through the latest developments in physical activity in and around schools, in both primary and secondary education. Through inspiring examples and case studies, they will demonstrate the many opportunities available in and around schools to help children and young people become more active, move better and enjoy physical activity more.
This symposium is suitable for all (future) professionals who work with children and young people, including teachers, physical education teachers, community sports coaches, school leaders, policymakers and researchers.

The focus and content of the symposium provide an excellent prelude to Dave Van Kann’s inaugural lecture, which will be delivered after the symposium. Both the symposium and the inaugural lecture are open to the public, free of charge and will take place at the Sport Academy campus .

About the lectorate

Over the past eight years, the Move to Be lectorate has developed into a stable research group recognised for its social contribution to lifelong physical activity. The lectorate’s research focuses on three knowledge themes: learning to move, an active lifestyle and a movement-friendly environment.

In the coming years, in line with the Fontys strategy Fontys for Society, the Move to Be lectorate will focus on increasing the social impact of practice-oriented research. It has therefore been decided to appoint a lector of ‘Learning to Move in and around the School’, who will work with lector Steven Vos to fulfil the ambitions of the Move to Be lectorate. The appointment of this new lector will give children a stronger impetus from an early age to engage in sufficient, high-quality physical activity through Fontys Sport Academy, while further embedding the theme of ‘prevention’.

Research

Dave Van Kann is currently working, among other things, on encouraging physical activity among children in and around primary schools.
