Students do not have the right to strike. That right is reserved for employees in paid employment. Students are subject to compulsory education. Until the age of eighteen, they are required to attend school or hold a havo/vwo diploma.

Students who are absent from school without permission, for example because they are demonstrating, are truant. The school is required to report 16 hours of unauthorised absence from lessons or practical training within a period of 4 consecutive school weeks to the compulsory education officer. The compulsory education officer determines how serious the matter is and may impose sanctions in the most extreme cases. If a student skips school for one day during the aforementioned period in order to demonstrate, the school is therefore not required to report it.

School management may decide to give students permission to be absent from lessons. For example, if the school believes that demonstrating is in line with the educational programme. If a school gives permission to demonstrate, this does not constitute truancy.
