What do you get if you take part?

School Garden Week is packed with activities. You can find an overview here.

  • Did you know that one in five primary school pupils thinks that a potato grows on a tree or bush? It’s high time to change that! For Outdoor Learning Day, you will receive the Big Potato Lesson Plan free of charge. You can also carry out the lesson if you don’t have a school garden.
  • You can also request the School Garden Film free of charge. Fun for the children, but certainly also for parents or the school board.
  • You will receive a toolkit containing a poster, photos for social media, sample letters for parents and your municipality.
  • You will receive a special newsletter four times, featuring information about the activities and useful school garden tips.
  • Would you like to start school gardening? Then you can take part in the election for the Golden Carrot Seedling or attend the online consultation hour First Aid for School Gardening (read more below).
  • Do you already have a school garden, on your own school grounds or at a special complex or allotment garden? Then register your location on the map. This will help us see how many there are and whether new ones are being added.
  • Of course, you can also take part in all existing school garden activities. The Week is an excellent opportunity to draw extra attention from the municipality, parents, neighbours or local media to your efforts to teach children how their food grows and everything that happens before it ends up on their plate.
  • And encourage your municipality to take part in the election for the Golden Carrot 2024. This award goes to a municipality that provides strong support for school gardening. To enter, your municipality must submit an enthusiastic vlog by 24 March. Read more here.

Help getting started

Would you like to start school gardening, but don’t know how? Record your specific question for help in a short video and submit it by 1 April. You may be eligible for the Golden Carrot Seedling! The winner will receive tailored support from a vegetable garden coach or a financial contribution towards the costs. During School Garden Week, we will share the videos and people will be able to vote. The winner will be announced on Thursday 11 April.

As a teacher, you can also join the online consultation hour First Aid for School Gardening on Thursday 11 April from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Ask your pressing questions! For municipalities, a separate online consultation hour will be organised that day on supporting schools with school gardening.

A great opportunity to start school gardening: in March, the Lekker naar Buiten incentive scheme will open again.

For supporters

This week, we will also put school garden supporters in the spotlight. A national gathering will be organised especially for you on Wednesday 10 April. We also ask you to open gardens at a complex or on school grounds to interested teachers, as a good example.

In the spotlight

School Garden Week is an initiative of the School Garden Alliance and Jong Leren Eten. During this special week, we will put school gardening in the spotlight together with teachers and supporters. Together, we will show school boards, municipalities and many others how important and enjoyable this is. School gardening contributes to children’s development, learning, cooperation and learning to eat healthily. In the school garden, children learn with their heads, hearts and hands.
