Research shows that as many as 14% of children already have incipient hearing loss. Children mainly listen to loud sounds through headphones or earbuds, for example while gaming, watching videos and listening to music. Listening to loud sounds frequently can cause hearing damage, which cannot be repaired. That is why it is important to pay attention to hearing from an early age. A secondary school teacher emphasizes this: “I do think it is important, because these children walk around with earbuds in day and night. You also notice that when these children talk to each other, they increasingly speak louder to one another.”
The lesson package
That is why VeiligheidNL has developed an online lesson package so that children learn from an early age how to take good care of their ears: the HoorToren. The lesson package contains teaching materials for all primary school grades and consists of assignment cards, games, posters, worksheets and a quiz. In this way, children learn about how hearing and sound work, the importance of healthy hearing, the causes and consequences of hearing damage, and all the ways in which hearing can be protected. The lesson package is part of Healthy School and is recognized by the Centre for Healthy Living.
The study
To ensure that the HoorToren aligns well with its target group, VeiligheidNL is conducting a study and would like to hear your opinion! What do you think of the materials, in what way can/would you like to use the lesson package, and to what extent is the content suitable for the children? Will you take part?
For the study, you will work with the HoorToren: you will teach a few lessons (approximately 30 minutes per lesson) before the summer holidays and complete a questionnaire afterwards (approximately 15–20 minutes). Your input will make the HoorToren even better! Sign up here!
Will you take part? Then you will be the first to use the renewed lessons, help prevent hearing damage in children, and receive a thank-you gift for your class!
