Why should you offer breakfast or lunch at school?

By offering meals at school, pupils and students can learn more about healthy nutrition. Learning how to make healthier choices in what they eat and drink contributes to developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. After all, what is learned young is learned for life. Healthy School offers tools for this purpose. These enable education professionals in primary education, special education, secondary education and MBO (secondary vocational education) to positively influence the lifestyle of their pupils and students. This helps pupils and students develop healthy habits.

What should you pay attention to when offering food and drinks at school?

Healthy School considers it important that the meals offered are varied and healthy. The Netherlands Nutrition Centre, Healthy School’s knowledge partner, has guidelines and ideas for healthy school lunches.

How do you ensure healthy nutrition at school?

It is best if food and drinks at school are part of a broader approach, so that the chance of lasting healthy habits is greatest. It is not only about providing a healthy selection, but also, for example, about being able to make healthy choices. Healthy School advises schools to use the Healthy School approach to work on the Nutrition theme.

The Healthy School approach consists of a step-by-step plan for primary education, special education, secondary education and MBO. By carrying out the step-by-step plan, attention is paid to nutrition in various ways throughout the school: in lessons, in the school environment, in school policy and by identifying health or lifestyle problems. One-third of schools in primary education, secondary education and MBO are now familiar with Healthy School.
