During the symposium ‘Building healthy habits; How do you do that with children and young people with disabilities?’, which will be held on 28 June from 12:00 to 17:30 at Galgenwaard Stadium in Utrecht, Special Heroes would like to explore together with the participants how the challenge of a healthy lifestyle for children and young people with disabilities can be given greater substance. During the symposium, participants will also receive practical tools for encouraging healthy habits in daily practice.

Learning objectives

The symposium has five learning objectives:

  • Participants understand the importance of healthy behaviour and know which points of attention apply to nutrition, exercise and sleep.
  • Participants gain new insights into what they can do as professionals to shape healthy nutrition, more exercise and better sleep in rehabilitation and educational settings.
  • Participants gain insight into good practices, practical tools and support options for encouraging healthy habits.
  • Participants gain insight into how parents and the environment can be involved in a healthy lifestyle.
  • Participants become aware of their own role and response to a child’s behaviour.

Workshops

There are two workshop rounds. When registering, you can choose between workshop A and B. Everyone will attend workshop C.

Workshop A: The power of our responses to children’s healthy behaviour

Workshop leader: Bart Heeling, teacher and behaviour specialist

To encourage healthy behaviour in children as a teacher, support worker or parent, we must first and foremost look at ourselves. How much space and autonomy do we actually give them? Before they can make choices, children must first feel safe. Bart Heeling explains how we can provide this sense of safety through our responses to their behaviour.

Workshop B: Healthy habits in the family; the parents’ perspective

Workshop leader: Yol Kuijer, parenting coach, relationship therapist & trainer

There is a great deal of pressure on parents who have a child requiring intensive care. As a professional, how can you better align with parents by looking from the parental perspective, so that healthy habits in the home situation become as attainable as possible? What can you influence, and what can’t you?

Workshop C: How do you develop healthy habits among your pupils or clients?

Workshop leaders: Jiske van der Meulen, knowledge and innovation coordinator & Martin Fluit, programme coordinator, Stichting Special Heroes Nederland

More and more materials are becoming available, and there are wonderful examples throughout the country of how professionals and teachers encourage a healthy lifestyle among children and young people. In this workshop, we will share these with one another. Do you have something you would like to share with others? Send your good example or material to [email protected]! Every participant will attend this workshop.
