Extensive monitoring of physical activity

To gain an even better understanding of children’s physical activity, pupils at six locations in the city wore an activity monitor for one week. This recorded both their movements during school hours and in their free time. In addition, Maastricht Sport collected extra information through questionnaires completed by parents and children and analysed the class timetables prepared by the teachers.

The research is being conducted by the Move to Be research group at Fontys Sport & Exercise. Maastricht Sport is very pleased with this intensive collaboration, which is providing valuable insights.

Annual MQ scans

During the period in which monitoring with activity monitors was carried out, the annual MQ scans also began at all GKB schools. During this test, children perform various motor skills tasks as part of a circuit. This provides insight into their motor skills. By linking the results of the MQ scans to the data from the activity monitors, a complete picture emerges of both the children’s physical activity and their activity levels.

With these results, Maastricht Sport can further develop the ‘Healthy Child Centre in Motion’ programme, respond more effectively to the needs of schools and contribute to an active and healthy lifestyle for children in Maastricht.
