Healthy and tasty cafeteria snack

‘Create your ideal healthy cafeteria snack’. With this challenge, 50 groups of students from secondary and vocational education in Flevoland set to work to come up with a healthy and tasty cafeteria snack for their school. The criteria for this snack were the 5 Gs: enjoyment, affordability, health, convenience and conscience. Among other things, the jury assessed whether the snack met the guidelines of the Wheel of Five, whether it was a sustainable choice, and whether it was affordable and tasty.

Best entries

During Dutch Food Week, all entries were assessed by a professional jury.
The jury consisted of:

  • Lucy van de Vijver (Healthy School adviser)
  • Edwin Breet (cafeteria manager)
  • Anne Luz Pijnenburg (from The Waste To Success)
  • Stijn Steenmeijer (hospitality expert)
  • Marleen Warnaar (Jong Leren Eten)

The three best groups were invited to the grand final to have their tasty and healthy snacks assessed. The top three consisted of:

  • ‘the Smoothie Bowl’ from Porteum in Lelystad,
  • the snack ‘Tempeh-ation’ from Almere College in Dronten,
  • ‘Healthy and tasty pizza bread’ from RSG Slingerbos/Levant in Zeewolde.

They brought their products to the new building of Aeres University of Applied Sciences Almere on the Floriade grounds, where, with guidance from a number of nutrition experts, they made further improvements to their snacks. The jury chose Tempeh-ation because it is a plant-based, unique and tasty snack that can easily be prepared in a cafeteria setting and meets guidelines for healthier eating.

The winners Jasper, Leonoor and Lente from Almere College will be offered a cooking workshop, during which they will prepare their winning cafeteria snack together with a chef for the entire school.
