Everything at hand

Gendi starts with social safety at school and brings together as much as possible on the topics of LGBTQI+ and gender diversity: practical Gendi tips, teaching materials, personal stories, original videos, photo comics and more. With Gendi.nl, teachers have everything at hand to work with students on respect for diversity.

The name

In Luganda, the word gendi means: ‘I am doing well’. That is exactly what every teacher wishes for all students, regardless of their diversity in gender, sex and sexual orientation. But Gendi is also simply an abbreviation of GENder and sexual DIversity.

Taking positive action

Gendi is the successor to the 21-year-old Gay&School. As early as 2000, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science wanted to support schools in making the school climate safer for LGBT students. Since then, a great deal of knowledge has been acquired on this subject. Education laws have also changed in this respect. This means that we now have a much better understanding of how schools and teachers can address this positively, and that the inspectorate monitors this.

Working together on Gendi

School & Safety sees itself at the crossroads of everyday practice in schools, researchers with new insights and the government. School & Safety worked with all these parties to shape Gendi’s new content. And we will continue to do so.

A great deal of new information

In addition to a practical overview of teaching materials, the website offers many tips for working with pupils and students on respect for diversity. Pupils and students share their experiences with LGBTQI+ issues at school in short videos. Gendi contains new background articles and fact sheets. We are also launching blogs and a photo comic.

For citizenship education and social safety

Gendi’s primary target audience is individual teachers. In time, the in-depth articles will also serve as a source of inspiration for other education professionals. The website’s content is closely linked to education legislation concerning social safety and citizenship education.
