“We also want to be part of the solution in society,” KNHB director Erik Gerritsen said in an interview with NOS.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced on Tuesday evening that primary schools could reopen on 11 May. Initially, the cabinet wants classes to be halved in order to ensure sufficient space between pupils. Rutte suggested that one half of the class attend school one day, and the other half the next day. Schools may decide for themselves how to implement this measure in practice.

Gerritsen: “Primary schools need to spread children out across larger spaces. That is very difficult to organise. Our clubhouses and sports facilities are open during the day. We would be very happy to make them available for lessons to take place there.”

Playing sports at field hockey clubs

From 29 April, children up to and including the age of 12 may also play sports in groups again, meaning that field hockey training sessions at clubs can resume from that date.

“I also heard the prime minister say that he would like non-members to take part in sports. I am convinced that field hockey clubs across the country are ready to open their clubhouses in consultation with schools and municipalities, provide lessons there and offer outdoor sports activities to everyone of school age,” said the director of the field hockey association.
