What were your previous experiences like?
“To actually be able to do something with the outcomes of these study trips, we go each time with several colleagues. Every trip has given me, and therefore ROC van Twente too, something valuable.
For example, the integrated approach to health in education in Scotland led to sharpening our priorities and Healthy School policy. Involving the HR department in Sweden showed us the importance of connecting with the various bodies within the ROC organisation. And from Finland we learned not to make big plans, but to start small and allow something to grow.”
What did you expect from the Healthy School Study Trip to Iceland beforehand?
“I expected to gain insight into how the country had tackled the serious issue of excessive alcohol and drug use among young people.”
What is the most important insight you took away from the Healthy School Study Trip to Iceland?
“I took away several insights from this study trip:
- The importance of an integrated approach. Everyone involved must make a coordinated contribution. The community-based approach.
- The inseparable role (and responsibility) of parents in a successful approach.”
What did you find most striking about the Icelandic system?
“The power of using data: goals and policy aspects are adjusted based on the data.”
You are active in the MBO Council. Why do you think more MBO schools should join the Study Trip?
“When we return from a trip, we are full of ideas and inspiration to tackle and improve things. If several MBO schools take part, it is easier to address matters across the sector because the insights are shared and have been experienced together.”
