The ‘banana bread’ – a snack without fats, added sugars or milk – made by the four students was praised by the jury as a delicious and promising snack for the school canteen. On 27 March, the students were surprised in class with the good news and reacted with overwhelming joy. As a reward, they have won a cooking workshop for the entire class.
The other finalists also showed their best side. The ‘Spicy chicken sandwich with bell pepper spread’ from Veluws College Walterbosch in Apeldoorn came second. Third place went to the ‘Lebanese tabbouleh salad with pomegranate’ from Graafschap College in Doetinchem.
A few days earlier, it had already been announced that Aeres VMBO Lelystad had won the School Canteen Challenge in Flevoland.
About the School Canteen Challenge
The School Canteen Challenge is part of the Jong Leren Eten programme and is carried out in collaboration with regional partners. The challenge encourages students to come up with a snack that meets the 5 G’s: Enjoyment, Good value, Healthy, Convenience and Green. In addition, they learn how to set up an effective promotional campaign. The goal? To let young people experience for themselves how enjoyable and achievable it is to make their school canteen healthier and more sustainable. The challenge aligns with the nationwide De Gezonde Schoolkantine programme run by the Netherlands Nutrition Centre, which helps schools improve their food environment.
