“Relationships and sexuality is a complex theme and is closely interwoven with the other themes. Entering into a relationship, for example, is part of the theme of social-emotional development. But sexuality also has to do with personal care, safety, and can also have points of contact with dealing with recreational substances, to name just a few examples.” Maaike emphasizes the importance of the theme: “Sexuality develops from birth and is an essential part of being human throughout life.”
Elaboration of core and sub-core elements
Within the theme of Relationships and sexuality, the curriculum framework distinguishes four core elements, subdivided into eight sub-core elements. These have been elaborated into content and learning pathways. Core element 1, for example, addresses Physical development and Self-image. For each sub-core element, various content areas have been identified and elaborated for each target group in a continuous learning pathway.
Maaike indicates that the content of the theme of Relationships and sexuality was developed in collaboration with the Rutgers and SOA Aids Nederland institutes, and that use was also made of the Guideline for sexual and relationship education. “It describes which subjects are relevant for sexual education at which stage of development and what children and young people should know, think and be able to do regarding relationships and sexuality at each stage.”
