Deployment of community sports coaches at schools

In 2022, one or more community sports coaches were active at 20 percent of secondary schools. This is lower than in 2018 (37%) and 2014 (33%). This decline is mainly reflected in the proportion of coaches deployed at schools once or a few times a year. This is probably because many one-off activities did not take place in recent years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tasks of community sports coaches at schools

At secondary schools, community sports coaches are most often deployed to organise and supervise sports and physical activity programmes. This includes both extracurricular sports provision at school (such as tournaments and clinics) and physical activities during school hours (such as sports during breaks). In addition, community sports coaches advise on and refer students to sports opportunities and/or health-promoting activities in the municipality.

These results are based on the monitor ‘Physical Education and sport in secondary education’ (expected in autumn 2022) and the panel surveys among community sports coaches and their employers conducted in spring 2022.
