Samsam is a Dutch journalistic and educational magazine for children aged eight to twelve and a teaching method for global citizenship. In the special issue on Media, which will be published on 12 November, we let children from all over the world talk about their media use. They explain what they think of journalists, whether they ever encounter fake news and how they recognize it. The magazine also looks at the importance of radio in rural Kenya. A girl from Egypt talks about her father, who was imprisoned because he wanted to do his work as a journalist. Radio makers from South Sudan explain how they provide information from Amsterdam to their fellow countrymen who remained behind. Samsam also gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at how Samsam is made.

The teaching material

Through Samsam's lessons, children learn knowledge and skills that are also useful in other subjects and that encourage them to think about the society in which they live and their role in it. Among other things, they learn about:

  • Democratic rule of law, cultures and sustainability
  • Dealing with diversity and recognizing their own prejudices
  • Putting themselves in someone else's shoes and seeking connections
  • Taking responsibility for their own surroundings
  • Listening, discussing and working together

The lesson consists of lesson instructions and processing assignments for groups 5/6 and 7/8. The building blocks covered in this theme are Freedom & Equality and Power & Participation.
