At the heart of the approach are Gender & Sexuality Alliances (GSAs), student clubs at schools that are committed to LGBTQI acceptance. These GSAs use the checklist to determine how their school scores and consider how it can improve. For example, they check whether their school provides sufficient support to LGBTQI pupils and whether sexual and gender diversity is addressed in the classroom.

According to COC, more and better attention to LGBTQI acceptance at school is important because LGBTQI pupils are bullied up to four times more often than average. In addition, the word 'homo' is the most commonly used insult in schools.

The scores of schools are displayed on the Education Standard website. Schools that, according to GSA pupils, achieve a sufficient score will receive a sticker in April that they can use that year to show that they are committed to LGBTQI acceptance. The website offers teachers, pupils and parents numerous options for improving attention to LGBTQI acceptance at school.
