Why?
Secondary school students often do not get enough sleep, which leaves them tired in class, causes their performance to decline, and affects their overall well-being. Due to changes in their biological clock, young people do not become sleepy until later in the evening. Nevertheless, they need between 9 and 11 hours of sleep. You cannot achieve that if you have to get up early for school again. Various studies have shown that schools with later start times help young people sleep longer and better; they also have positive effects on their academic performance and general well-being.
Yet there are still few secondary schools in the Netherlands that have introduced later start times. This is, of course, quite a challenge! That is why Brenda would like to speak with schools that have implemented this change. She wants to know why and how they introduced it and how it is working out. This way, she can help other schools do the same.
