In the morning, the pupils in Year 8 will start the school day by raising the special campaign flag, followed by an exciting traffic quiz in which they will test their own knowledge of road safety. They will be asked questions about current topics such as cycling in MONO mode, blind spots and practising the route to school.
Model school and District Ministers for a safe school environment
Nutsbasisschool Dirk van Veen shows what is possible when the school, parents and municipality join forces. The area around the school has been made low-traffic, parents are actively involved and the children are co-owners of their own road safety in several ways. The District Ministers, Year 7 pupils who are committed to themes such as road safety, sustainability and social cohesion, have actively contributed to the VVN safe school environment programme over the past year. They gathered ideas and worked with local residents and parents to make the school environment safer and more pleasant to live in.
National kick-off
In addition to the Minister, councillor Arnoud van Vliet and Evert-Jan Hulshof, director of Veilig Verkeer Nederland, will also attend the kick-off. They will emphasise how important it is to work together in the Netherlands to build neighbourhoods where children can grow up safely and move around freely. Hallokids Radio will report on the event and give the children a voice in the road safety debate.
Taking part is easy
If we are so proud when children learn to cycle, why do we take them to school by car? Walk or cycle instead. Veilig Verkeer Nederland helps parents, schools and municipalities make the school environment safer. Useful tips can be found at vvn.nl/schoolomgeving. Through campaigns including ‘Our schools are back in session’, Veilig Verkeer Nederland draws annual attention to the importance of a safe school environment.
