The award marked the conclusion of the pilot phase of the ‘Specialist in Active and Healthy Schools’ programme and presented the pathway through which teachers specialise in promoting a healthy lifestyle in primary education. The award ceremony was part of the event ‘Off to a Flying Start: Specialist in Active and Healthy Schools’.

“The most important part of the training was actually learning about change management: how do you get parents, school management, colleagues and children on board when creating a Healthy School? I’ll take that with me,” an enthusiastic student explains.

For four years, the University of Applied Sciences Arnhem and Nijmegen, Inholland University of Applied Sciences, Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, Marnix Academy, Stenden University of Applied Sciences, Leiden University of Applied Sciences and partners from the professional field worked on developing a curriculum for training Specialists in Active and Healthy Schools. All universities of applied sciences can now join, with the aim of having a Specialist in Active and Healthy Schools at every school.

“We hope that as many teacher training colleges as possible will get to work with the Active and Healthy Schools programme. The next cohort starts in September and is open to anyone seeking to deepen their knowledge of health in primary schools,” invites Monique van Ark, project leader of the programme.
