Overall assessment

Almost all schools are (very) positive about EU Schoolfruit (92%). On average, the programme receives a rating of 7.9.

Schools are most positive about:

  • children becoming familiar with (different types of) vegetables and fruit and
  • children receiving the vegetables and fruit free of charge
  • the programme encouraging healthy eating (by promoting attention to and awareness of it).

Communication

The weekly digital EU Schoolfruit newsletter was received by 97% of schools and rated 7.9. Most schools also drew the attention of other teachers and/or the principal to the information in the newsletter (93%). In total, 78% of schools referred parents to the newsletter for parents.

Organic vegetables and fruit

This year, schools received organic vegetables and fruit several times for the first time. 85% of schools consider this a good idea. Approximately two-thirds would like to receive more organic products in the future.

Class II vegetables and fruit

For the third year, schools received vegetables and fruit several times with cosmetic imperfections (Class II). 83% of schools believe that it is good for this type of vegetables and fruit to be offered.

Chef! educational portal

Chef! is the free educational portal about food education.

With an average rating of 7.7, schools are generally satisfied with the EU Schoolfruit introductory lessons. In addition, the short lesson activities receive an average rating of 7.6 from schools.

School fruit policy

Schools were also asked whether they have a policy on bringing fruit and vegetables to school outside the period when school fruit and vegetables are supplied.

In total, 58% of schools have established fixed vegetable and fruit days; approximately half will continue this after EU Schoolfruit. Almost half of the schools that have established fixed vegetable and fruit days have set these for 5 school days per week. A further 28% and 8% of schools have 3 and 4 fixed vegetable and fruit days per week, respectively.

Bringing fruit and vegetables to school

Approximately two-thirds of schools (68%) believe that children (and parents) are encouraged by the EU Schoolfruit and Vegetable Programme to bring vegetables and/or fruit to school themselves in addition to the (fixed) fruit days.
