What do parents have questions about?
It appears that parents are mainly looking for tips on encouraging physical activity and for knowledge about what is good for their child’s development in relation to sport and physical activity. Parents have the most questions about:
- Sports. For example: how much should children exercise and from what age is playing sports suitable?
- Playing outdoors. For example: how do you encourage children to play outside in bad weather and how do you deal with feeling unsafe outdoors?
- Balancing family/work/sports. For example: the challenge of sports and work schedules coinciding, or children needing to be in different locations at the same time.
- Encouraging and motivating. Think of children who reluctantly go cycling with their parents or motivating children to do something active after a day at school.
- Screen time. Parents are, for example, looking for games that encourage physical activity and tips on getting children off the sofa and outside.
- Physical activity guidelines. Parents would like to know, for example, how much physical activity toddlers need and whether it matters how a child moves (playing, playing sports, etc.).

What will the Knowledge Centre for Sport do?
Following this small-scale study, Stichting Opvoeden will conduct a follow-up study among its parent panel. This will provide even more insight into parents’ experiences, challenges and questions, enabling us to provide suitable tips. The results of this follow-up study will be available in the second week of May.
