Why this school?
According to the jury, Stedelijk College Eindhoven (Oude Bossche Baan vocational secondary education location) has taken systematic steps both inside and outside physical education lessons to get its complex target group moving. There are some excellent initiatives that support active education, such as formative assessment, elective lessons, sports during breaks, staff sports and offering Movebreakers during lessons.
“The active-school concept is still very much under development. ‘Active’ offers a broader perspective than ‘sports-oriented’ or ‘sporty’. At all five nominated schools, we saw wonderful active initiatives to get children moving more and better and to keep them active. Stedelijk College Eindhoven, Oude Bossche Baan location, has worked out many aspects well and intelligently. The school and its development-oriented subject department have even more ambitions for an active school, but the school can be proud of the progress made so far!”, says Eric Swinkels, a member of the jury for the Active School Award.
Why this award?
Research shows that only 39% of young people aged 12 to 17 meet the physical activity guidelines. Screen time is overtaking physical activity, and motor skill deficiencies are increasing. The Royal Association for Physical Education (KVLO), the initiator of the award, wants to use it to draw attention to the importance of a movement-friendly school day.
“Schools can make a major contribution to encouraging physical activity. By rewarding and sharing good examples, we hope to inspire other schools to incorporate physical activity structurally into their school day,” says Nathalie Termorshuizen, project manager of the Active School Award at KVLO.
Response from the winning school
Matthijs Rosielle, a physical education teacher at Stedelijk College Eindhoven, enthusiastically responds to the win: “It feels very unreal! We were already very proud of being nominated. And now to be the winner as well is simply fantastic! We are very proud of the momentum we have created, with a fantastic team, together with the management and all our colleagues, to get students moving more. I think we have some wonderful plans for the future that we can develop even further.”
The Active School Award is an initiative of KVLO and is supported by Beweegalliantie and Calo Windesheim Zwolle.
