The Schoolyards of the Future scheme has been delivering tangible results for years: the total now stands at 416 green schoolyards in Noord-Brabant. This year, twenty primary schools and five secondary schools will receive funding for their green plans.

“We invest not only substantially and enthusiastically in strong, resilient nature for Brabant, but above all, very directly, in opportunities for children and young people,” says Hagar Roijackers, provincial executive for Nature of the province of Noord-Brabant. “A green schoolyard is a place where learning, exercise and play come together. At the same time, we are contributing to climate adaptation and biodiversity (the variety of life in a particular area). That is a win on all fronts.”

Climate-proof, creative and healthy

Green-blue schoolyards provide shade on hot days, collect rainwater and encourage exercise and collaboration. The natural design stimulates creativity, reduces stress and makes learning more enjoyable. Schools with a well-considered plan for construction, maintenance and educational integration could apply this spring for a contribution of up to 70 percent of the costs, with a maximum of €10,000 per project.

Scheme to reopen on 1 May 2026

Due to the large number of applications, the budget for 2025 has now been spent. Schools can submit a new application from 1 May 2026. The scheme will close no later than 3 November 2026, but possibly earlier if the budget has been spent. Applications are submitted through the Cultuurfonds Noord-Brabant.
