A green schoolyard contributes to biodiversity and protects the school from heavy rainfall, heat and extreme drought. Over the past 6 years, the scheme has already transformed 350 paved schoolyards into adventurous green outdoor spaces. Thanks to the reopening of the scheme, even more primary schools—as well as secondary and vocational education institutions—can green their outdoor grounds. “Working together on green schoolyards immediately creates a cooler, more beautiful and healthier play, living and learning environment that everyone can enjoy. We hope many schools will join us,” said Hagar Roijackers, Provincial Executive for Nature, the Environment and the Brabant Rural Area Programme.
Even more benefits
At most schools, mobile phones have already been banned, allowing pupils to concentrate better and interact more with one another. A green schoolyard helps to encourage this interaction and social contact. During breaks, pupils and teachers can relax and recharge in this healthy environment before lessons and other activities. But a green, natural and adventurous outdoor space offers more than fun and relaxation: it provides challenge, development and safety, and reduces bullying. Pupils learn to assess risks and make choices. They also gain more (self-)confidence and develop their motor skills. And with a food forest or vegetable garden, pupils reconnect with pure, healthy food.
Applying under the scheme
Schools with a well-developed plan for construction, maintenance and integration into lessons can apply for a contribution of up to 70% of the costs, with a maximum of €10,000 per project. This year, the scheme runs from 1 May 2024 through 4 November 2024, or until the subsidy budget has been reached, if that occurs earlier. The subsidy will be allocated in the order in which complete applications are received.
