Facilitator

This training is delivered by education and training consultants with knowledge and experience in delivering trauma informed professional learning. They have a strong understanding of trauma and its impact on children and families and how this applies in education settings.

Introduction

Schools play an important and powerful role as part of a team around children and young people who have experienced trauma. Daily interactions with an educator or other school staff can promote wellbeing, model safe relational exchange, and contribute to healing and recovery.

For over 20 years, Making SPACE for Learning (MSFL) has been successfully guiding schools to adapt their practice to promote healing for children and young people who have experienced trauma. Launching in 2026 is a reinvigorated MSFL framework, incorporating current research and practice wisdom in a new framework built on solid and proven foundations.

The new MSFL framework reflects the concept of Trauma-Transformative Practice, which includes contemporary knowledge bases for the transformation of trauma. The process of transforming trauma can happen in schools through the supportive ongoing relationships that can be built with students, families and the community. Schools can influence this transformation on many levels through providing experiences for students that enable them to heal from the effects of trauma, build a sense of belonging and be ready to learn.

This workshop introduces a revised set of principles (SPACE) that can be applied within an education environment. The workshop guides educators and other school staff through the practical application of these principles, supporting schools to integrate this knowledge in responding to the needs of children and young people impacted by trauma.

Target Audience

This workshop is designed for all staff working in schools and alternative education settings. It offers valuable insights for educators in a range of roles, including school leaders, professional support staff, and others involved in supporting students’ learning and wellbeing.

• Describe the knowledge base of neurobiology and the developmental needs of children and young people.
• Define trauma and explain its impacts on children and young people in an education setting.
• Explain and apply the Making SPACE for Learning framework, including the SPACE Principles and Places of influence.
• Integrate the practice framework into professional context through strategies and activities.
• Reflect on and apply approaches to maintain and enhance professional wellbeing in educational settings.
